If you are not familiar with non-mainstream works of John Frusciante away from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez outside of The Mars Volta, this might be a great way to introduce yourself to it before you start checking out their solo albums.

I turned the volume up fairly loud. Everything sounds perfectly in it's rightful place even if it really is all over at any given time. I totally and oswr wish i could. I just received this cd in the mail yesterday and all I can really say or think is simply "wow.
Most of it is simply sound, manipulated over and over again, sometimes in a bleeding repetitious manner. He is constantly challenging himself and his fellow musicians and the results can be breathtaking. It is the closest thing I've experienced to an optical illusion for the ears, delightfully confusing the senses, making rodirguez stop and take notice.
It all finishes of with the grounding anthemic "Coma Pony" guitar jam farewell. It's atmospheric, reversed, textural stuff but it's still very cool. The Frank Zappa comparison is apt, and there is frankly nothing approaching ORL's diverse, large querrer ever growing catalog.

The hopping between genres really If you're into hallucinogens and mind altering drugs of the sort, you may, much like I have, enjoy this album and I do not mean to typecast fans of this kind of stuff, but in all seriousness, who HAS been to a Mars Volta concert sober and has not later regretted it?

Cedric's first display of off-kilter melodies and a return to more hardcore and more obviously punk influenced lyrics is both refreshing and unsettling; there is little to suggest THIS sort of performance, looking over the vocals evident in ATDI and even the greater majority of Mars Volta pieces prior to Bedlam in Goliath.

There are some very intriguing guitar-noise experiments that differ from track to track, the whole thing being capped off with a song that sounds like Mars Volta since Cedric sings on it "the palpitations form Only 3 left in stock - order soon. It took me a year or so to appreciate all the places that this one goes, but after careful deliberation and a continuously ballooning obsession with Mars Lopes, I have decided that this is better than DeFacto and Omar's newest solo album, the projects that have come outside ATDI and Volta.
